Eligibility Criteria

At the time of application, an applicant must:

  • Be a domestic graduate student (Canadian citizen, permanent resident, protected person)

  • Be registered full-time in a doctoral program in the health sciences and will maintain full-time registration throughout the academic year immediately following the current competition


  • Demonstrate financial need

  • Demonstrate academic merit
    • Have achieved at least A- ("A-" = 80%)​ or equivalent in each of the last two completed years of study (full-time equivalent); 
      • ROSI print-out is sufficient for the U of T transcript. Each applicant must also provide a copy of their previous institution’s official transcript; this copy may be obtained upon request from the applicant's U of T graduate unit
    • Or if the student has completed two years of graduate studies, the student must only demonstrate an overall average of at least A- ("A-" = 80%) or equivalent on all graduate courses completed.
      • ROSI print-out is sufficient for the U of T transcript; in this case, a copy of the previous institution’s transcript is not required

Application & Nomination Procedure

  1. University-Wide Awards application form

  2. Completed financial need assessment section within the application form​

  3. Transcript(s), as per above

  4. One copy of resumé/CV

  5. One page plan of study/research proposal in non-technical language; the introduction must state how the applicant's research meets this award's research criteria​

  6. One letter of reference addressing the applicant’s academic merit from an academic supervisor/advisor or a faculty member familiar with the applicant’s academic work (one page maximum).​
