English Language and Writing Support (ELWS)

Welcome to the Office of English Language and Writing Support (ELWS). Housed in 63 St. George Street, within the School of Graduate Studies, ELWS provides graduate students with advanced training in academic writing and speaking. Graduate students need to be able to communicate sophisticated information to sophisticated audiences. As you prepare to attend your first conference, to write your first proposal, or to publish your first paper, you will need stronger communication skills than those needed in undergraduate work. By emphasizing professional development rather than remediation, ELWS can help you cultivate the ability to diagnose and address the weaknesses in your oral and written work.

The Office of English Language and Writing Support offers four types of instruction designed to target the needs of both native and non-native speakers of English:

All of our programs are free. While the workshops function on a drop-in basis, consultations require an appointment, and courses require registration.

Online registration for our May/June courses opened on April 22nd.  Students may take a maximum of two ELWS courses during the May/June session.  Please read the registration instructions and the attendance policy.  Course descriptions can be found here.

We will be offering three single-session workshops in June.  Our next full session of workshops will be held in Fall 2013.

The resources page of our website provides links to useful online material related to academic writing and speaking. For further information on the nature of our offerings, and on your eligibility to participate, click on one of the links above or visit our FAQ page.
