Registration Instructions
Step 1. Please review the term’s schedule which is posted above.
Step 2. Click on the TITLE of the course you are interested in taking. You will then be taken to the Course Descriptions and Registration page.
Step 3. After reading the course description, you may register for the section of the course you are interested in by clicking the REGISTER prompt after the Instructor's name.
Step 4. You will then be prompted to enter your student number.
Please note: If your student number is rejected but you are a registered U of T graduate student, contact us at register.elws@utoronto.ca with your name, student number, department, and the course for which you wish to register. If you are not a registered U of T graduate student, you are not eligible to take our courses.
Step 5. Enter your first and last name, e-mail address and select your department from the drop-down menu. In order to proceed, the section button must be selected. Note that only the start date is listed on this page. If the section start date does not appear, this means the course has already started and online registration is no longer possible. Click the ‘Sign Up’ button; you should see a message on your screen stating that your registration information has been sent to ELWS.
If the course you are interested in is full, you have three options:
- Complete the form and click the ‘Sign Up’ button to be placed on the waiting list.
- Check another section of the course.
- Register for a different course.
Once you have registered, you should receive a confirmation e-mail. If you do not receive an e-mail, contact us at register.elws@utoronto.ca with your information.
Step 6. Repeat steps 1-5 to register for a second course (in September and May sessions only). Please do not register/add yourself to the waiting list for two sections of the same course. This usually results in students dropping one of those sections at the very last minute, thus preventing other students from getting into the course.
If you wish to drop a course, please visit the Find Your Courses page. Enter your email to view and/or cancel your registration BEFORE THE COURSE BEGINS. The system will not list your course or allow you to drop a course after midnight of the course start-date. If you wish to drop a course after it has started, please contact our office.
Attendance Policies
Our courses are in heavy demand, and they are only open to graduate students at U of T. We ask that you register for a course only if you are sure you can complete it. We have implemented the following attendance policies out of respect for the many students who wish to take our courses but can’t get in.
- Attendance is mandatory.
- Students who register and miss classes will be blocked from registering in the first session of the next term (including students who register for a course but never attend).
- In order to avoid penalty, students must notify their instructor with a valid reason for their absence before class.
- Students can drop a course before it starts without penalty. Those wishing to drop a course after the first class must notify our office within 48 hours. If students drop a course after the second class, they will be blocked from next term’s registration.
- Since demand for our courses exceeds supply, we request that students take any given course only once a year, with the exception of the proposal writing courses which may be taken in both the spring and the fall.
