Through the generous support of numerous donors, a number of endowed awards have been established at the School of Graduate Studies. This year, more than 15 awards with various eligibility criteria and values are offered within the 2012-2013 SGS University-Wide Awards competition. The application, individual award descriptions and submission instruction sheet can be found below.
Deadline
Each graduate unit will set their own internal deadline prior to selecting the final nominees to forward to the SGS competition. Please be sure to contact your graduate unit directly for the deadline and their email address to which you will send your completed application and all supporting documents.
Application Form
Complete and submit one 2012 University Wide Award application form and one reference letter only; these may be used for multiple awards. Indicate on the Application Cover Sheet, the individual awards for which you are eligible and would like to be considered for by your graduate unit. Please refer to the application instructions for further details. Incomplete applications will not be accepted.
OSOTF Category of Awards
The University-Wide Awards identified as “OSOTF” are only open to eligible students who are Canadian citizens, Permanent Residents of Canada or Protected Persons and demonstrates financial need as indicated on a completed Financial Needs Assessment Form. Students must meet all the requirements of the specific award in addition to the OSOTF requirements.

Eligibility criteria for each award can be found by accessing the links below. Awards are available to students in specified or all divisions. Students may consult SGS' "Divisional Structure" to determine which of the four divisions their graduate unit belongs.

Adel S. Sedra Distinguished Graduate Award - Closed
This award is sponsored by the University of Toronto Alumni Association (UTAA). One fellowship of up to $25,000 is awarded annually to a graduate student who demonstrates outstanding academic and extracurricular leadership.
The selection committee will choose a group of finalists to be interviewed. Candidates who are interviewed as Sedra finalists, but not selected as the Sedra scholar, may receive a $1,000 honorarium in recognition of their achievement. The Sedra scholar and all finalists will be honoured at the Awards of Excellence ceremony in the Spring.

Connaught International Scholarships for Doctoral Students - Closed
The primary purpose of the Connaught International Scholarships for Doctoral students is to assist graduate units in recruiting and supporting outstanding international scholars to the University of Toronto's graduate programs. The effective value awarded to each student will be $35 000.00 total (including tuition).

SGS Conference Grant

Fall 2011 Competition: Closed
Fall 2011 Conference Grants not collected by May 14, 2012 will be considered void.

Fall 2012 competition will support conferences taking place between September 1, 2012- March 31, 2013.
Purpose
The SGS Conference Grant is intended to encourage eligible students to actively present their research at a regional, national or international conference or equivalent academic event early in their program.
Eligibility Criteria
To apply applicants must be:
- Doctoral-stream: M.A, MA.Sc., M.Sc., PhD, including flexible-time option PhD; in a professional masters program that can lead to a doctoral degree; in a professional Doctoral program (S.J.D., D.M.A., Ed. D.)
- Registered full-time at the time of application
Registered full-time at the time of conference attendance - In good standing as defined by their graduate unit
- An active participant (e.g. speaker, poster presenter, member of a panel or round table) in a conference (or other academic meeting) relevant to their academic program
Applicants need not have received confirmation of their participation in the conference at the time of application.
Value
The value will be based on the event’s registration-fee (at the student-rate) as well as a pre-determined amount based on the location of the event.
Preference will be given to applicants who are in the early stage of their academic program, have not previously attended a conference during their current program and/or who have not previously received an SGS Conference Grant. The SGS Conference Grant is not intended to be the principal source of funding. Applicants are expected to seek funding from other sources, and must list other resources that will or may be used to support their conference attendance.
Applying to the SGS Conference Grant
Step 1
The SGS Conference Grant application is only available online. Applicants should ensure they have access to a printer as we strongly encourage printing a copy of the completed application before pressing the “submit” button. Both the applicant and the Supervisor/ Advisor will be required to enter their UTORid and password in order to access the application.
After logging-in, applicants will be asked for the following information:
- Details of the conference or academic event (title, location, registration-fee at the student- rate, URL)
- Details regarding the presentation of the research (title, etc.)
- Supervisor/Advisor’s name and correct email address
- Previous conferences in which research has been presented during current degree program
- Potential other sources of funding that may be available to support this conference attendance (which
will not negatively impact the application)
Applicants will need to complete and submit the online application in one sitting; the application cannot be saved in draft form and will time-out after one (1) hour. Please close all internet browsers before beginning the online application.
Step 2
After submitting the online application, the Supervisor/Advisor will receive a copy of the completed application by email within 48 hours. The Supervisor/Advisor will be asked to complete and submit their portion of the application by April 13th, 2012 and will be asked to:
- Confirm the applicant is in good academic standing
- Confirm that the conference is appropriate at the current stage of the applicant's program
- Confirm the information regarding available monetary support for the event
Notification of Results
Successful and unsuccessful applicants will receive email-notification regarding the results of their application. The details of the grant, including the amount of funding, will be included in the email to successful applicants.
Payment
In order to receive the payment after the conference has occurred, successful applicants will be required to submit all of the following documentation within 1 email to conferencegrant@sgs.utoronto.ca:

Proof of conference registration payment (e.g. conference invoice)

Proof of conference attendance and active involvement (e.g. conference programme listing the applicant’s name or Certificate of Attendance received from conference organizer confirming active involvement)
1) Fully exit all internet browsers (i.e. Internet Explorer, Chrome, Firefox)
2) Open only one browser window when accessing the application
