China Scholarship Council
In partnership with the University of Toronto, the China Scholarship Council (CSC) offers scholarships to outstanding Chinese students who will pursue doctoral or postdoctoral studies at the U of T. For doctoral students selected by the CSC, U of T undertakes to cover the cost of tuition while the CSC will provide the student with a stipend sufficient to cover living expenses, return airfare and visa application fees. For selected postdoctoral fellows, the CSC will provide a postdoctoral award and U of T supervisors will provide additional financial support.
Value
The CSC will cover return airfare, visa application fees, and annual living allowance including the University Health Insurance Plan. The University will cover the candidate’s tuition fees (exclusive of other fees, such as registration or student association fees) and consider them for further financial support.
Eligibility
In order to qualify for a CSC doctoral scholarship, the candidate must be a Chinese citizen or permanent resident and cannot be working or studying abroad at the time of application. Eligible students will have excellent marks, and will undertake to return to China upon completion of their studies.
Students must also meet all of the U of T's requirements for admission to a doctoral program. Typically, this entails the prior completion of a degree equivalent to a U of T Master’s as well as meeting the minimum English language requirements. In order to apply for the CSC scholarship, students must already have received an unconditional offer admission from the University of Toronto promising to cover the cost of tuition.
Application Procedures
Please apply to the University of Toronto as usual. When applying, make sure to notify the Department or Program, through the Graduate Program Coordinator, and the potential supervisor that you will also be applying for a CSC scholarship, or that you have already been offered one.
Once you receive an offer of admission from the U of T, you should apply for a CSC scholarship through your home university.
Your candidacy for a scholarship will be evaluated and referred by your home university to the China Scholarship Council. Further information on this process is available on the CSC Website.
Please note that the funding offered to you in your letter of admission will be contingent on your successful application for a CSC Scholarship.
Required Documents
You will need to submit:
- A hard copy of the signed CSC Application form
- Completed CSC Employer Reference Form
- A copy of the full application to the University of Toronto plus supporting documents such as communications with the supervisor
