Ontario Graduate Scholarships (OGS) - Now Closed
The Government of the Province of Ontario provides graduate scholarships for outstanding graduate masters and doctoral students. These scholarships are available to students in all disciplines and are tenable only at Ontario universities.
Value and Duration:
International students registered in an Ontario university are eligible to apply. Ontario Graduate Scholarships are valued at $15,000 for a three-term academic year, or $10,000 for two-terms.
Application Procedure:
Applications for these scholarships are made through your graduate department and each department sets its own deadline for application.
Deadline:
OGS deadlines normally fall at the end of September. Please check with your graduate unit in order to verify their deadline for a given competition year.

The Queen Elizabeth II Graduate Scholarships in Science and Technology (QEII-GSST)
Purpose
The Queen Elizabeth II Graduate Scholarships in Science and Technology (QEII-GSST) Program is designed to encourage excellence in science and technology based graduate studies. The program is supported through funds provided by the Province of Ontario and raised by the University of Toronto.
Value
$15,000 per year or $5,000 per term
Application Procedure
Applicants are required to submit the completed OGS application to the graduate units sponsoring the program (most departments in the Physical and Life sciences have QEII-GSST's).
Deadline
Please check with your graduate unit in the spring for information.
Duration
The award is given for one academic year at a time, which may consist of two or three consecutive terms. The award is not automatically renewed; students must apply annually.
Maximum Support
Master's students can receive the scholarship for a maximum of two years and doctoral students for a maximum of four years, subject to a lifetime maximum of four years per student. Master students are not eligible for a QEII-GSST after two years of study at the master level and doctoral students are not eligible for an QEII-GSST after five years of study at the doctoral level.
Eligibility
Applicants must:
- be enrolled in masters and doctoral research programs in the Applied Sciences, Biological and Life Sciences, Physical Sciences
- be Canadian citizens or permanent residents who plan to enrol full-time in a master's or doctoral research program in science and technology at U of T
- have maintained an overall average of at least A- or equivalent during each of the last two full years of study
- exhibit research ability or potential, excellent communication skills, and leadership abilities
- applicants who have defaulted on a Canada or Ontario Student Loan or a loan made under the Ontario Venture Capital Program, or have failed to make satisfactory repayment on an Ontario Study Grant overpayment, may be ineligible.
- students pursuing a professional masters program (e.g. Master of Engineering, Master of Forestry Conservation, Master of Mathematical Finance, Master of Science in Planning, Master of Heath Science etc.) are not eligible for the award.
Terms and Conditions of Award
Recipients must:
- hold the award at the University of Toronto
- be enrolled as a full-time graduate student in science or technology
- repay the award if s/he is in full-time attendance fewer than 14 weeks in any term, transfers to another graduate unit, withdraws or changes to part-time status
- not be enrolled in a qualifying or “make-up” year or be on a paid educational leave or sabbatical
- only hold other awards up to a total of $10,000 per year, but cannot hold an Ontario Graduate Scholarship (OGS) for the same year of study in which they hold an QEII-GSST
- not exceed the maximum of 10 hours/week on average when accepting research assistantships, part-time teaching positions, other employment
Ontario Trillium Scholarships (OTS) - Now Closed
Purpose
The Ontario Trillium Scholarships (OTS) program is a significant initiative to attract more of the best qualified international students to Ontario for PhD studies. This program supports the 2010 Open Ontario commitment to increase the number of international students in Ontario while maintaining spaces for qualified domestic students.
Value
The effective value to each student in 2012-2013 will be $40,000.00 total (including tuition). The University of Toronto has 15 awards to allocate;
The OTS is held for four years and automatically awarded to the student for each of the three years following the first year provided the student maintains good academic and continues to meet recipient eligibility requirements;
Eligibility
Nominees must:
· be an international student;
· be intending to pursue full-time PhD programs within the funded-cohort;
· begin their program in the September 2012-2013 academic year;
· have achieved an A- average in each of the last two years of full-time study;
· not have completed more than one year of PhD studies prior to receipt of the OTS;
· not currently be studying at an Ontario institution; and
· not concurrently accept Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC), the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC), or the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), or be in receipt of an Ontario Graduate Scholarship (OGS), or The Queen Elizabeth II Graduate Scholarships in Science and Technology (QEII-GSST) award.

Nominations are accepted only from the graduate units. Students interested in the Ontario Trillium Scholarship (OTS) are encouraged to contact their graduate unit when applying for admission to the University of Toronto.
