Congratulations on your admission to the School of Graduate Studies (SGS), University of Toronto!
SGS prepared the Information for New Students (PDF) brochure and the Essential Grad Guide (PDF) to smooth your transition to graduate studies at the University of Toronto. These materials contain vital information on fees, registration and enrolment, medical insurance and housing, and much more. If you require further information or assistance, contact your graduate unit.
SGS hosts a graduate orientation for new students in September and in January. Your graduate unit may also hold an Orientation for graduate students in your specific program, which will provide more detailed information on your program.
Free workshops are offered to graduate students by the University of Toronto Libraries. Visit the Library Workshops webpage for a complete listing of workshop offerings.
The University of Toronto Tcard is an access card for services on campus. It acts as your identification, library card – it has a myriad of uses. To learn more visit www.utoronto.ca/TCard.
You will need a valid University of Toronto TCard to create your UTORid. Your e-mail account at U of T is associated with your UTORid. It is important to activate your UTORid to receive communications from U of T, SGS and Graduate Awards Office.
To meet your housing goals check the Housing Bulletin (PDF) and visit Student Housing. For advice and access to family services visit Family Care Office. Discover all the academic, health and personal support services and opportunities to participate in the campus and wider community available through Student Life.
The Graduate Students' Union (GSU) is a democratic students’ union that represents full-time and part-time graduate students. GSU provides services such as health insurance, confidential advice, and a voice for the graduate student body on the various committees of the University.
In partnership with SGS and other student life units catering to graduate students, Student Life Programs publishes "Grad Nav: Your Guide to Finding Community at U of T”.
The Graduate Professional Skills Program (GPS) consists of a variety of offerings providing doctoral stream students with a range of optional opportunities for skills development. Grad Room is a great place to study, relax and socialize with other graduate students.
International Students
Supplementary Form for International Students (PDF) gives international students further information on entry into Canada.
The Centre for International Experience is the place for international students on the St. George Campus to sign up for medical insurance (UHIP), apply for off-campus work permits, seek advice and mentorship, and much more. They can also provide you with valuable advice on coming to U of T and offer orientation for new international students.
If you have any further questions, please contact a graduate administrator in your graduate unit, as they would be pleased to help you with any questions prior to and after your arrival.
