Extensions
A course work extension may be appropriate if academic (e.g. unexpected problems of research in a course) or non-academic (e.g. illness) reasons make it impossible for you to complete course requirements on time.
You may apply for an extension by submitting the Course Extension form to your graduate unit prior to the deadline for completion of course work.
If you have been granted a course extension, the graduate unit will assign the temporary non-grade report SDF (Standing Deferred) until your final grade report is received.
During an approved course work extension, you will continue to pay tuition fees according to your program status (i.e. full-time or part-time, domestic or international).
If you are unable to complete the required course work during the extension period, you may apply to your graduate unit for a continuation of the extension. Second course work extensions must also be considered by the School of Graduate Studies (SGS). Second course work extension requests must be made before the expiry date of the first extension period.
Candidacy Extension
As a doctoral student, you are expected to advance to candidacy within 3 years (4 years for direct entry) from the date of initial registration. If you do not achieve candidacy within this time, an extension to achieve candidacy may be permitted in exceptional circumstances.
If you require an extension to achieve candidacy, complete the Extension to Achieve Candidacy form and submit it to your graduate unit for review.
Doctoral students on an approved candidacy extension must continue to pay full-time domestic/international tuition fees.
Program Extension
If you do not complete all degree requirements within the time limit for your degree, you may submit a request for program extension.
Master’s students may be considered for a maximum of three one-year extensions. The first two extension requests require the approval of the graduate unit; the third requires the approval of both the graduate unit and SGS.
Doctoral students may apply for a maximum of four one-year extensions. The first two extension requests require the approval of the graduate unit; the second two require the approval of both the graduate unit and SGS.
To seek an extension, complete a Program Extension (current regulations) form and submit it to your graduate unit along with an explanation for the delay and evidence that the remaining degree requirements may be completed within the period of the extension request.
During the extension years, all doctoral students pay fees at 50% of the domestic rate plus full-time sessional incidental and ancillary fees. See Graduate Fees for more information on the pro-rating of fees in the final extension year.
Full-time master’s students on extension pay 50% of the domestic fee plus sessional incidental and ancillary fees. Part-time master’s students on extension continue to be charged part-time fees.-Back to Top-
