- Notes for Bulgaria
Pre-university education requires 12 years of study.
Bulgaria joined the Bologna process in 1999.
In 2002 universities and specialized higher schools (academies, institutes) adopted a three stage system:
First stage – 4 years, leading to a Bachelor’s degree
Second stage – 5 years, or 1 year following a Bachelor’s degree,
leading a Master’s degree
Third stage – a three-year course of study upon obtaining a master’s degree, leading to a Doctor’s degree.
There are three types of Doctorate, each requiring at least three years of study following the Masters: Doctors, Doctor of Sciences, and Doctor Honoris Causa.
Since 2004, transcripts report ECTS and a Diploma Supplement is issued to every graduate.
Colleges are included in the system of higher education but do not enable admission to degree granting institutions. They allow for the acquisition of non-university (undergraduate) education. College graduates acquire the qualification and educational degree of “Specialist in …..”, which allows them to practice the profession acquired. College graduates may continue their education at a higher institution on the basis of the qualifications acquired at secondary schools.
Graduates receive one official transcript from which copies must be verified/certified/legalized to serve as official transcripts for application purposes. For detailed information on certification and legalization procedures visit the National Centre for Information and Documentation Academic Recognition site of the Ministry of Education, Youth and Science.
The Academic Recognition site also hosts a list of companies contracted by Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Bulgaria to serve as official translators of academic documents:
