Pre-university education requires 12 years of study.
Private higher education institutions are acceptable if they have been granted State accreditation.
In some fields of study, bachelor’s study and master’s study have been merged together into integrated study. The nominal duration of integrated studies is 5 years. These programs are offered in the fields of medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, veterinary medicine, architecture, civil engineering and class-teacher training.
*A Specialist Diploma requiring 5 years of study may be considered as equivalent to the Magister and considered for doctoral admission.
Bologna Note:
Estonia joined Bologna process in 1999.
Since 2002/2003 most universities (i.e. University of Tartu) started to offer three cycle degree system:
First cycle (bakalaureusekraad) – 3-4 years
Second cycle (magistrikraad) – 1-2 years
Third cycle (doktorikraad) – 3-4 yearsDiploma Supplements have been issued by institutions since 2001.
ECTS grading system is being used in addition to the local grades.Diploma of Specialist is no longer offered.
