Notes for Hong Kong

REFORMS AND RECENT CHANGES:
The Hong Kong education system underwent fundamental changes in the late 2000s. The new curriculum, which was introduced in 2009, sees a shortening of the senior secondary period by one year. As a result of the new senior secondary curriculum, the length of the undergraduate degree program has been extended to a nominal duration of four years.

Summary of main changes:
• Introduction of a 12 year school education system – first graduates in 2012
• 4-year Bachelor (Honours) Degree – first graduates in 2016

NEW ACADEMIC STRUCTURE
The new four-year program sees a step towards a broader curriculum and development of `soft skills` such as communication and teamwork. The four-year structure has brought undergraduate education more in line with mainland China.

Completion of the program allows access to Master`s program and other postgraduate study.

The first students of the new Bachelor program graduated in 2016.

OLD ACADEMIC STRUCTURE
Bachelor degree courses normally lasted three years; some may have taken up to six years depending on the subject area. Programs were largely based on the English model. The first year was generally considered to be a foundation year, while the second year and third years were more specialised.

Completion of the program allowed access to Master`s programs and other postgraduate study.

The final students graduated from three year programs in 2015.

Under the old system, if a student`s achievement is insufficient for an “Honours” degree, a “Pass” degree is awarded. A General Degree is usually not classified and not equivalent to a U of T 4 year degree. Polytechnics were given university status in 1993. Degrees granted prior to that time are not acceptable.

The higher education system in Hong Kong has expanded especially since 1995 with an increase in the number of degree-awarding institution.

The normal pathway for higher education (old system):
• Bachelor (Honours) Degree (3-5 years)
• Master Degree (1-2 years)
• Doctoral Degree (2-3 years).
