Notes for Israel

Before following a higher education course, most Israelis spend two or three years fulfilling their military service.

Bachelor’s Degree
Bachelor degrees vary in duration from three to six years, depending on the subject. The Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Arts is a three-year programme in which the student chooses either a single major area of study supplemented by electives, or two major areas of study. Assessment is based on the submission of written work, which may include essays, seminar papers, laboratory work, as well as end of semester examinations. This is acceptable as equivalent to a UofT four-year bachelor’s degree.

A dissertation or supervised research paper is a requirement for some programmes but is not a formal requirement for all Bachelor degrees. Bachelor degrees in professional subjects, including agriculture, education engineering, law, nursing and pharmacy require four years of full time study. The first year of study usually covers a general first year where students are introduced to the fundamentals of the discipline.

First degrees in architecture, dental surgery and veterinary medicine normally require five or six years of full time study. Medical degrees are seven years in length and include a one-year internship. The degree of Doctor of Medicine is conferred on completion of a medical degree and the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine on completion of a veterinary medicine programme. The veterinary medicine degree requires completion of the first two years of a Bachelor of Science degree, followed by four further years of study related to the discipline.

Master’s degree
Master’s degrees are awarded after two years of study following the Bachelor degree. Some universities may require high scores in the student’s Bachelor degree. In some cases, evidence of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) and the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) tests are also requested together with personal interviews Programmes consist of a taught course followed by examinations. Most programmes require the completion of a dissertation, though some subjects, such as education, may include a period of assessed practical placement instead of the dissertation. Master’s programmes without a dissertation do not normally entitle the holder to access doctoral study.

Doctor of Philosophy
The Doctor of Philosophy is the highest-level qualification in Israel and is conferred after a minimum of three years of study. Most doctoral programmes require a Master’s degree for entry, although some universities accept Bachelor degree holders with very high grades in a related subject.
