Bachelor degrees

The two main types of degree course are the Bachelor (General) degree and the Bachelor (Honours) degree. The general degree is four years in length and the honours degree takes five years to obtain. Degrees in professional subjects such as Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Engineering, Architecture and Veterinary Medicine generally last five or six years.

The medium of instruction is generally Arabic, though some faculties (usually medicine or engineering) and private institutions conduct lessons in English.

Postgraduate awards

The Postgraduate Diploma is a one- or two-year course taken upon completion of a Bachelor degree. It is open to graduates of the Bachelor (General) or Bachelor (Honours) degree. It usually requires an “Excellent” or “Very Good” grade (which equates to a mark of at least 70%) for entry.

The Master’s degree is a two- or three-year course open to students who hold a Bachelor (Honours) degree. Those who hold a hold Bachelor (General) degree are required to complete a Postgraduate Diploma before they can register for the Master`s degree. Some universities require an entrance exam for specific courses.

Upon completion of the Master`s degree, the Ph.D. requires at least a further three years of study. Students must undertake independent research and present the final thesis.
