Building Community Through Small Talk – Online Workshop
October 16, 2020 @ 9:00 am – 10:30 am EDT
This online workshop is taught by Clare Nippard
Small talk helps us establish professional connection and build rapport in many situations, including meeting new colleagues, interacting with peers, attending meetings or conferences, and interviewing for jobs. However, using small talk effectively is challenging; sometimes we are not sure how to initiate a conversation, what to talk about, or how much to say. These challenges are often increased in online contexts. This workshop will focus on practical strategies to build confidence and skill in using small talk to help us network and build community both in person and online. This 60-minute interactive workshop will be followed by a 30-minute Q and A session. While everyone is welcome, the content is primarily designed to support students who do not speak English as a first language.
This is the third of 5 workshops in the Preparing for Academic Writing and Speaking in English workshops in the Online Communication workshop series.
This workshop will be offered online. Please register to receive a link to join the workshop at the scheduled time. If you are not able to register online (i.e. if you are not a currently registered U of T graduate student), please contact Lauren at firstname.lastname@example.org and she will register you manually.
