Graduate Speaker Series is a bi-weekly series for UofT students featuring UofT graduate students from all academic backgrounds presenting their research and ideas to a general audience of graduate students. We invite all UofT graduate students to attend, engage with speakers, learn about academic disciplines other than their own and build new connections.
This week, we are hearing from Andrei Gulnev!

“Crypto-Law for the Digital Economy – How to Build a Legal Comparative Advantage for a Digital Start-up? “
Smart Contracts promise new efficiencies to the participants of the Digital Economy – the digital platforms, their clients (both suppliers and consumers), and the wider public. Furthermore, by offering compatibility with the frameworks of Smart Contracts, manufacturers of devices and services might leverage the new, digital ways of interaction with their clients, too. My research focuses on the efficiencies of speed and self-execution as well as legality of smart contracts that may become a new “legal” comparative advantage for the entrepreneurs who are willing to employ the smart contracts in their new ventures. I want to discuss the current state of the available legal frameworks, the challenges and solutions to the known issues, and the practical guidance for the aspiring innovators.
