Safe Space for Race – Race and Disability

November 25, 2020 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm EST
UTGSU’s Race and Ethnicity Caucus presents “Safe Space for Race: Race and Disability.” The event will be an open discussion on disability in marginalized communities facilitated by executive members of the Race and Ethnicity Caucus. We are excited to create a safe (virtual) space for students and community members to share their stories of disability and race-related experiences.
Disability is often regarded as a lack, a deficiency, and a thing to be fixed within an individual. Disability, when regarded as such, is undesired. This story of disability is not new and perhaps one you have told or been told. But what other stories of disability might we know that perceive disability as more than just a problem? What happens when the story of disability meets the story of race? What does it mean to experience disability and race together? During this peer-facilitated session, we will share stories of disability and race, discussing the ways we have learned to understand disability and race together as well as apart.
This event will be held on Zoom on November 25, 2020, from 6-8pm.
