Notes for Costa Rica

The Bachillerato Universitario is awarded after four or five years of study and the accumulation of between 120 and 144 credits. This type of qualification does not usually require the completion of a dissertation.

The Licenciatura may either be awarded following the Bachillerato Universitario or it may be a single qualification with entrance based on the Título de Bachiller or equivalent. This depends on whether a Bachillerato Universitario is available in the field of study. A minimum total of 150 credits are required for the Licenciatura, including the credits obtained for the Bachillerato Universitario if this has been studied. This qualification requires the completion of a dissertation and is more specialised than the Bachillerato Universitario.

A Maestría is awarded after a minimum of two years study following a Bachillerato Universitario and requires the completion of 60-72 credits. For some Maestría courses, students may be required to complete some preparatory modules which do not form part of the Maestría course. If a student has completed a Licenciatura prior to entry, they may be exempted from some of the preparatory courses at institutional discretion, but the Licenciatura does not give any advanced standing onto the Maestría course.

There are two types of Maestría: the Maestría Académica in academic fields and the Maestría Profesional in professional fields. For both types of course students must have a working knowledge of a foreign language.

The Maestría Académica is a research based course and at least 30 credits must be spent on research work. The course content will vary according to each student, as there are not necessarily any compulsory modules. At the end of the course students must present and defend their thesis in front of a panel.

The Maestría Profesional is based on taught courses and at least 40 credits must be spent studying taught modules. The independent study part of the course may take the form of case studies, work placements or other activities and at the end of course students must present a report.
