- Recognized Universities
Until 2000, all Bachelor degrees had to be awarded in collaboration with accredited overseas universities, including the University of Wollongong in Australia and the University of Birmingham in the UK.
Since 2000, the Maldives National University (MNU) (previously Maldives College of Higher Education until 2011) has been authorised by the government to offer a range of Bachelor degree programmes. A Bachelor degree generally lasts for three to four years and requires a minimum of 360 credits. Bachelor degrees are offered in different fields such as arts (BA), sciences (BSc), education (BEd) and business administration (BBA).
The number of Master’s degrees is also limited though they are offered at the Maldives National University and College of Islamic Studies; some private colleges also conduct some Master’s degrees. Master’s degrees require a minimum of 240 credits and contain a significant research element in the form of a thesis dissertation or substantial research paper. A Master’s degree can be fewer than 240 credits where it builds upon a four-year or longer Bachelor degree; however, it must not be fewer than 120 credits.
As of 2020, no graduate programs are offered at the Maldives National University.
