- Notes for Zimbabwe
Bachelor`s degrees from the University of Zimbabwe are considered the most prestigious degrees.
* We require “Merit” for Ph.D. admission.
There are two types of Bachelor degree: General and Honours. As in the United Kingdom, the differentiation is not in terms of length, but in the content of the course. General and Honours degrees are three or four years in duration.
In the General degree students take either two major subjects, or one major subject and at least one minor subject, in accordance with faculty regulations of the university.
In the Honours degree, the student takes at least one major subject. When an Honours degree is taken in the same subject as a General degree, courses are taught and examined at a level requiring a greater breadth and depth of knowledge and understanding than that studied for a General degree.
Students who pass the General degree must undertake a minimum of one year`s study (or two years on a part-time basis) to be awarded the Honours degree.
Universities use various methods of assessment including continuous assessment, examinations, industrial placements, research projects and dissertations.
In certain subjects the Bachelor degree is not offered as either an Honours or General degree. These include the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery, Bachelor of Dental Surgery and the Bachelor of Veterinary Science.
Master`s degrees are between one and three years in duration and consist of coursework and a dissertation. A good Honours degree is required for admission. Most of the country’s universities offer programs at Master’s level.
Master of Philosophy
The Master of Philosophy (MPhil) is a two to three-year research-based postgraduate qualification where the student follows a prescribed program of research under the direction of a supervisor. Students may be able to undertake coursework, though it does not normally constitute more than 25% of the program.
A good Honours degree is required for entry and students have the opportunity of transferring to doctoral program in the same subject if their performance is deemed to be of a very high standard.
Doctor of Philosophy
The Doctor of Philosophy (DPhil) degree is a three to four-year research-based postgraduate qualification where the student follows a prescribed program of research under the direction of a supervisor.
The submission of a thesis is required for completion. As in the MPhil, students may undertake elements of coursework to enhance their research studies.
A Master’s degree in a related subject is required for entry.
