Writing a Personal Statement for PhD Applications – Prerecorded Workshop
April 30 @ 5:00 pm EDT
Available on demand until April 30, 2023
This prerecorded workshop is taught by Stephanie Redekop
The personal statement (sometimes called the “statement of purpose”) is one of the most important parts of a PhD application. This 30-minute online workshop will help prospective PhD applicants understand the purpose and conventions of this genre. Examining a range of examples, we will identify several writing strategies that can help applicants to make the most of their limited word count and craft a compelling statement. Specific topics of discussion will include framing one’s research interests effectively, balancing the focus between past qualifications and future goals, understanding how “personal” the statement is expected to be, and describing one’s “fit” with a prospective program.
