James Santangelo

PhD '22, Ecology and Evolutionary Biology

Dr. James Santangelo is currently a Miller Postdoctoral Fellow with Rasmus Nielsen in the Department of Integrative Biology at the University of California, Berkeley.

In summer 2022, James completed his PhD supervised by Dr. Marc Johnson and Dr. Rob Ness in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of Toronto. His dissertation leveraged replicated urban environments around the world to test the extent to which natural population evolve in the same way when subjected to similar environmental pressures, and to better understand the traits and genes facilitating adaptation to one of the world’s largest and most destructive environmental disturbances—cities.

James has published 14 journal articles and 1 book chapter, 10 first-authored, and has won numerous departmental, national, and international awards and fellowships in recognition of his work.
